The 3-D Building Solutions Approach

We do all of our work—investigations, design review, training—using the exact same approach, the 3-D approach. It is based on the following premise:

High performance buildings are valuable because they:

  • Keep occupants safe and comfortable.
  • Use energy efficiently.
  • Do both of the above for a long time.

Any building can deliver these three performance attributes IF it has been designed, specified, and constructed to protect against or manage these five phenomena:

  • Heat
  • Air
  • Water (liquid and vapor)
  • Radiation
  • Pests

We evaluate plans, specifications and buildings looking for continuous protection or management of these phenomena. We know that any problem of occupant safety, occupant discomfort, or building durability can either be avoided or solved with this approach. It never fails.

Putting it all together, the 3-D approach looks like this:

Let us show you how to translate this model into your energy-efficient, safe, comfortable, and durable building.

Built into this model is the best way to manage three of the most important drivers of high performance and profitable buildings—durability, risk management, and quality.

Of course, this conceptual approach to understanding and analyzing buildings must be followed up with keen attention to details. Let us show you how to translate this model into your safe, comfortable, and durable building.

Notes:

(1) This approach is based on a model developed for the Department of Energy’s Building America program; 3-D Building Solutions principals contributed to the development of this model during employment prior to the formation of 3-D Building Solutions, LLC.

(2) The “ASTM” checklists refer to checklists that are developed according to ASTM E-241, “Standard Guide for Limiting Water-Induced Damage to Buildings.”
